There's this place in Pearl City called Gyotaku. I think it means something like "fish prints" or the like, but don't quote me on it. We usually go here every now nd then. Now, I'm not saying this is the best Japanese restaurant in Hawaii, it just happens to be one of the more convenient and affordable ones.
Here's a pick of salad and miso soup that come with the meal. They do have awsome dressing BTW.
For those of you who are not familiar with ethnic Japanese food, this is what is called "chawan mushi" or bug bowl. Nah nah nah, It's basically a mixture of egg, soup base, shitake mushrooms, chicken, and crab that's steamed in the bowl until it turns into a "jelloee" consistency. It happens to go great over white rice too. One word, "friggin ono"!
Aha! The "piece de resistance"(IDK how it's spelled)! This my friends from around the world is "CHIRASHI". If you are truly a sushi love maker, you have got to eat one of these. It's all different kinds of sashimi pieces over a bowl of suchi rice with nori flakes. Basically one-big-ginormous sushi. The differing flavors just explode in your mouth like bacon fat. This is the one dish I always order when going to different Japanese restaurant. It describes the caliber of the fish as well as the sushi chef. Bon appetite everyone.
Don't knock it till you try it. If your ever in need for a quick sushi pick me up, head on over to your nearest convenience store and pick one up. Although these little treats don't look like high grade sushi, they still pack a good wallop of taste. I like the way they seperate the nori from the rice to keep everything crisp and fresh.
Well today was Boss's day and what better place to take your boss to lunch than Roy's at Koolina.
If you've never been here, just head on over to the golf course and it's in the same building as the club house.
They're one of those restaurants that always change their menu for variety purposes. Today we got to choose from their special lunch menu.
All together there were lucky 13 of us. Everyone got their dish, almost every dish was different, and we started our feast.
Well that was one killer lunch. Hope you guys enjoyed the pics. I'm definitely going to ride my bike tonight and burn off these calories.
BTW, if you want some other shots of our lunch. Go visit my fellow blogger Sam here at www.jasamee.vox.com. She probably got a better shot of the bento.
Friday was a busy day of work and the UH Warriors were playing on ESPN so we decided to have our lunch around game time at The Alley in Aiea Bowl. If you haven't been there recently, you gotta check out how they renovated the place. They got huge lcd tvs and have very tastefully seperated the bar from the bowling alley.
Because we were on our lunch break I couldn't order a drink but boy did I want to, especially with the game going on. Anyway, if your curious about other UH games that are pay-per-view-live, then go down to The alley to catch it. It's a two drink minimum and $10 food order but hey...you gotta drink and eat right?

Well ended up ordering the Tasty Chicken Bowl. There's a bunch of other menu items but this is what they've become known for. The bowl is $6.95 and comes with a choice of 1 scoop brown or white rice, either mac or toss salad, and the most tastiest garlic fried chicken you'll ever have. I would have ordered the plate, but we had to go back to work...i.e. sleep syndrome.
Here's a pic of the plate. It's about $8.75 and you get 2 scoops choice of rice and a lot more chicken. Like I said, get ready to take a nap.
Next it's on to my favorite place of all time, Sushi Ten at Waikele. OK, well I'm a bit bias because I consider the family that runs it like my own. Anyhow, the food is still awsome none the less. These guys are more than your private golf course restaurant, they're also your place for weddings, birthdays, company functions, and a whole slew of other things.
My reason for attending tonight, oh it's Saturday now, is for a 60 year old yakudoshi party.
I should have took a better picture of the pupus but trust me, it was "broke da mout." They had tako poke, ahi poki, edamame, chips and bean dip, this mandoo with kamaboko inside, oh and the best yet...hosted bar! I had like 4 heinys and was feeling rather good.
On with the buffet!
Wow. Prime rib with au jous. Crab legs. Kal bi. Garlic Chicken. Mahi mahi. Chow mein. Sushi. Salads. Nuff said.
Here's closer look at the buffet. Getting hungry. Wish you were here. Sorry.
What a surprise! It's our old friend Kim (first girl on the left) that we haven't seen for like 8 years or so. She's a teacher now and used to be an Agagi but got married and now is a Holden. Anyway, there's some funny stories about how drunk she would get. Oh don't wory Kim, I won't embarass you...yet.
Well this turned out to be a very interesting Tuesday...
Check out this unreal shot of Hawaiian snow. Damn I'm stoked that I live in Hawaii. This is a shot on our way into town. Gee, there was killer traffic this morning.
So here's the reason. There's some kind of accident going town bound near the Kunia exit. I wonder what happened?
Oh snap! WTF! No wonder they closed down 2 lanes. How do you do that to a car so early in the morning. I mean, I may be tired but if I'm that tired then I'm calling in sick.
Hey Mr. Superferry! Kinda bummed that your not working cause I think your a good idea. Hey at least we got those city boat things going. I seriously wanna try those out. For 2 bucks you can't go wrong.
Well it's linch time in town and what better food to eat than Mexican. We scoped out this cool little shop on Hotel street near Bar 35. What a find.
How authentic is that? You have a Mexican flag and a sombrero on the wall. Hey the prices are pretty good too.
So Sam got the Flautas. It's basically a deep fried burrito. It looked crazy delish. You see that plate? It's like twice the size of a standard plate.
Our boss, Bruce, got the chicken fajitas with refried beans and spanish rice. He got the soft tortilla to wrap all that goodness. Damn that smelled good.
I just stuck with the burrito, or should I say, the plate-lunch-box-size burrito. The burrito was awsome, though I wish he hooked me up with more beans and rice. those refried beans were "broke da mout" good.
Ahhh, time to take a nap on the ride back to Kapolei. BTW, if you want another opinion of this place check out my affiliate at www.jusamee.vox.com.
I know, your wondering WTF? Did he eat some place else? Yup. Went to Gyotaku for some din.
Here's a shot of the Yasaka. It's basically teri-chicken, tempura, and sushi. It's cool and all but I'm not a tempura fan.
Across the way is an order of the combination plate. For $17.95 you get all of this plus miso soup and salad. Trust me, it was a lot of food. Check out that California roll. Dang I love sushi.
Last but not the least is my order of the Kaisen Chirashi. I must admit that Chirashi is my fav when it comes to Japanese food. It's basically an assortment of fresh sushi ingredients over a bowl of sushi rice. Just think of one huge supreme sushi. Now my favorite one of all is at Kunio's in Waikele but Gyotaku's wasn't that bad.
